⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Hatsuharu Sohma
Age: 15
Canon: Fruits Basket
Canon Point:  End of Chapter 45

Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.

Personality: Hatsuharu is usually a pretty chill, if quirky dude, generally seeming unaffected and/or disinterested in the constant chaos that happens around him while quietly looking out for his friends. "Pretty chill" is actually an understatement-- there really isn't much that can faze him, and if it does you'll probably have trouble telling unless you know him well. Haru lives the phrase "go with the flow", easily adapting to any situation and always keeping a level head... to the point that it's amusing and quite possibly concerning. Even in the midst of an argument between his friends, Haru, who has been completely desensitized, will allow his thoughts to wander to something completely unrelated. Things that would cause other people to flinch, such as jump scares or being bitten by a small tiger, hardly make Haru bat an eye.

This calm, quiet demeanor is what is known as his "White" personality. Like the spots of a cow, he has the less-often seen "Black" personality, which is a sharp contrast to his regular self. While "Black" Haru, he is very provocative, snappish, smug and incredibly violent. His inhibitions are so far gone that he once even grabbed innocent bystander Tohru by her arm. This isn't some random occurrence, thankfully, and is only triggered by things that upset Haru, such as his rival Kyo refusing to fight him or  his girlfriend Rin breaking up with him. Generally, the more upset he is, the more violent he becomes; in the event that Rin broke up with him, he went berserk and completely trashed an entire classroom. There doesn't seem to be any warning for when Haru is going to switch and it happens in an instant, and the same goes for switching from Black to White-- something as simple as water being dumped over his head or seeing a friend in genuine distress will snap him out of his rage and bring him back to his senses.

One of Haru's defining traits besides his split personalities is his odd way of thinking. If a normal person's thought process goes A -> B -> C -> D, Haru's thought process often goes A -> D or even A -> Ba/Bb. That is, either he jumps ahead in his train of thought, or he makes associations that often aren't immediately clear to others, leaving them wondering and confused. Combined with his tendency to express whatever it is that's on his mind, Haru often tends to say or do very... peculiar things. Like karate-chopping watermelons or standing under a water sprinkler fully clothed. Haru doesn't have a singular ounce of shame either, and has no problems walking around the house naked or showing a complete stranger his pubic hair to prove that his oddly-colored hair is natural. Black Haru may have no inhibitions, but to be honest, his White side isn't all that much better.

In a similar vein in regards to his thinking, Haru can also be rather absent-minded. The most extreme example of this is his bad sense of direction, supposedly thanks to the influence of the cow spirit. He once got lost on his way to the Sohma house for three days-- which he relays to Yuki rather calmly and nonchalantly. Also as mentioned earlier, he is easily distracted, sometimes zoning out as he thinks about how hungry or thirsty he is, for example, or abruptly leaving a situation in order to tackle a more pressing matter. In addition, when he saw the room he had trashed was clean, he said "Fairies really do exist..." instead of making the obvious connection that the other students had cleaned up after him. He isn't so much "stupid" as adults joked he was (due to being the Ox) as he is eccentric and occassionally spacey.

Haru is incredibly kind and loyal to his friends, but he often expresses this in subtle ways. For example, he knows that Yuki has a strained relationship with his overbearing older brother Ayame, who will make himself welcome even where he is not and will only listen to one person-- Hatori. Knowing this, he goes to Hatori to ask him to get Ayame to provide Yuki some relief. He also seeks out Yuki when he notices that he is troubled, quietly listening to his thoughts and basically telling him that time heals all (or at least Yuki's current) wounds, and that he will always be there for support. In general, he is good at picking up the telltale signs of others' distress and will go out of his way to help them even (especially) without being asked. It's clear that he does this unselfishly, as when Yuki recognized and thanked him for calling Hatori to deal with his brother, Haru is first shown to be surprised that it was acknowledged at all; followed closely by a pleased smile.

However, Haru is also the kind of person who thinks constantly about others and not as much about himself. His very even-tempered attitude should not be mistaken for a lack of caring or unaffectedness by what others say; Haru is actually quite a sensitive person. As mentioned earlier, when he was younger, adults joked that he was stupid because he is cursed with the Ox's spirit, and this hurt and upset him so greatly that it caused him to develop an intense hatred for the mouse, Yuki-- and once that very person asked, genuinely and kindly, if he was truly stupid, he broke into tears. Later on, when he talks to Yuki about he and Rin broke up, it was clear her repeated denials and dismissals of him left him feeling confused and hurt. As you can see, he doesn't think to bring up his problems unless directly asked, and insteads lets his feelings stew inside him, eventually causing him to snap and go black.

If nothing else, Hatsuharu is certainly... a character. His usual calm level-headness and his appearance may give the impression of maturity, but he is still very much a teenager at heart-- moody, impulsive, sometimes downright reckless and occassionally even rebellious. He may not seem all there at times, but regardless, there's a good, patient friend waiting within him for anyone who shows him kindness.

Abilities: Being cursed with the zodiac spirit of the ox, Hatsuharu will transform into a cow if he is either very weakened, or if he is hugged by a female. That's it, that's his ability. After several minutes, give or take, he'll revert back to a (completely naked) human. In the same vein, his curse causes cows to lure to him and makes them friendly towards him. Note: he does not have any super special cool cow powers and cannot brainwash cows or make them do his bidding. Except follow him around, I guess.

Aside from that, he knows some martial arts. He's probably somewhere above amateur level, and while he couldn't take down ten full-grown men with his fists alone, he could probably hold his own in a fight, at least for a few minutes.

As mentioned in the personality section, Haru has a white side and a black side, the former being his default state of being and the latter being triggered by upsetting circumstances. Again, nothing particularly supernatural about this, it's essentially just Haru throwing a hell of a temper tantrum.

Alignment: Sosyne. The polar opposites of calm and anger fit nicely with his white and black sides respectively.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample: Test Drive Thread. In case this isn't sufficient for the emotions requirement...

So anyone who meets Haru on the regular, especially if they've gotten used to the obnoxious showcasing ways of this world, will notice and feel (if they're close enough) that Haru consistently has this nice, gentle breeze about him, like the ones that feel like a breath of fresh air on a hot summer day. But not so today. Today, there is a noticeable lack of that breeze, as well as the much more obvious gloomy grey cloud hanging over his head. At least it's not raining on him... that would be rather inconvenient.

While happy couples go about their day... Haru can't help but think of Rin. Lovesick described him to a T. Perhaps it was ridiculous. After all, she broke up with him, and while he was mostly certain that she had done that in an effort to protect him... There's nothing he can do to validate those thoughts in Verens. There's no one here from home he can ask, let alone Rin herself. And on most days, he believes in his gut feeling.

Funny thing, though, that those feelings of loneliness would creep up on him on the couples' festival.
